I've been playing around with printing Warhammer
40k models. FDM isn't going to give you resin quality, and
definitely not going to give you Games Workshop quality. But at
25 cents per infantry model it's a great way to build out an
army. I plan on using the printed models at first with my
friends, and then slowly replace them with official models as ?I
find them on ebay and Mindtaker Miniatures in Vancouver, WA.
All The models I have printed come from
Cutls3d.
Search their site and you can find all sorts of minis.
I picked the Dark Angels Chapter since that was the army I
fielded back in high school for Second Edition. I had 2 tactical
squads with the models below to start with.
Printed Units (updated as new items are printed, and then
painted)
Vehicles and Dreadnoughts.
Infantry
The Current Army, printed unites and offical units:
The models are all printed with Overture PLA bought off Amazon.
I was able to get 2 rolls (1 Kg each) for $30 US.
Prusa Mini print settings: I am a bit impatient, so no .2 mm
nozzle, and 9 hour print times. I print with a .4mm nozzle,
using the mini's Input Shaper model, at .1 mm Fast Detail mode.
infantry size models take about 2 hours and 30 minutes per
model. You want to print them one at a time for improved quality
and no stringing. Also the models should sit at about a 20
degree angle so there is no flat "bottom" layer. Just give them
a bit of a lean in your slicer. I also use the "organic" tree
supports with the "Top Contact Distance" set to .2 mm.
